Capturing memories: Why Family Photography Matters

In a world that moves at lightening speed, it is important to take the time to reflect on what truly matters — Our families

I was looking at a photograph of my baby boy the other day, and I was instantly transported 14 years into the past. I could smell is baby smell, I could feel his fine, baby-soft hair, I could hear his tiny giggle, I could feel his heartbeat against my chest, and I was moved to happy tears. Family photography isn’t just about pretty pictures, its about capturing memories that will last a lifetime. Think about it — when was the last time you had a professional family photo taken? If you’re anything like a lot of families, it’s maybe every couple of years or it has been AWHILE since you were last in front of the camera. We get so caught up in our busy lives that we forget to take the time to document our most precious moments together.

Telling your story — Creating your legacy

But having family photos isn’t just about preserving memories for ourselves, it’s also about creating a legacy for future generations. When our children and grandchildren look back on these photos, they’ll be able to see where they came from, the people who loved them, and the memories that were made. I love to look back at the old black and white photos that my grandparents and great grandparents left behind and that family members have digitized. It’s incredible to see images of my dad as a tiny boy in his native Netherlands and my grandfather dressed up in his army fatigues during WWII. These are memories that tell the story of my family, and they mean the world to me. Over the past few years, we have learned how precious our time together truly is, and over the past few years, I have made it a priority to get my family photos take, if not annually, every other year. My children aren’t little anymore, but they are still rapidly changing and growing and I want to remember it all!

Time doesn’t stand still for anyone — unless you capture the moment

Photography is such a powerful way to document your legacy because it literally freezes time. I want to remember this life because it’s been such an incredible journey. But the best part, I am not just preserving this for me. I am preserving these memories for everyone that loves me and everyone that I love. So don’t wait any longer to schedule a family photo session. Make the time to capture these memories while you can. Whether it is a snapshot of a splendidly candid moment or a highly-posed portrait, these photos will be cherished for years to come.

Remember, our families are our greatest treasures. Let’s make sure we capture and preserve those memories for generations to come.
