Capturing Moments

A Guide to Creating Stunning Family Portraits in the Seattle and Eastside Area

A candid seattle senior photography session with the entire family smiling and laughing on their porch.

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine this scene: The sun is dipping low in the sky, casting everything in that dreamy golden glow. Your little one’s laughter rings out as they twirl in the grass. Your partner sneaks a glance at you with that look in their eye that is only reserved for you, radiating love and warmth. And for once, no one is forcing a smile at the camera or posing stiffly. You’re all just filled with joyous love and having fun. This is the kind of family photography session I live for—where moments are real, connections are front and center, and you walk away with images that feel like you.

What’s the Secret to Beautiful Family Portraits? Being Present

The best professional family portraits don’t come from stiff poses and forced grins. They come from you—interacting with your family, playing with your kids, laughing, snuggling, and simply being together.

Here’s what I love in a session:

  • Cuddles. Lots of them. Your little ones grow too fast—squeeze them in while you can!

  • Forget the camera exists. I’ll guide you throughout the session, but the magic happens when you focus on each other.

  • Look at your people. Gaze lovingly at your partner, tickle your toddler, whisper a silly secret to your kiddo.

  • Be open to games. Some of my favorites? The “Kid Sandwich” (where parents lovingly squeeze their kids between them), sneaky bear hugs, and that moment when parents creep up behind their kids, who know it’s coming but can’t turn around. The best giggles come from this one!

Timing is Everything: Golden Hour Magic

Family photography shines best in golden hour—the hour before sunset when the light is soft and flattering. But what works best for your family?

  • Spring & Fall: Earlier sunsets - This is the best choice for smaller kids, because they don’t have to stay up late, creating a happier environment for everyone.

  • Summer: Later sunsets - This is the perfect choice for families with older kids who can handle a later session start time. Reminder, Seattle sunsets in the summer can be as late as 9:20 pm.

Set Your Session Up for Success

Want happy kids and relaxed parents? Here’s the deal:

  • Don’t overbook your day. A jam-packed schedule makes for tired, cranky little ones (and stressed-out parents!).

  • Keep naps and snacks on schedule. Trust me, a well-rested, well-fed kiddo makes all the difference!

“I’m Not Good at Posing” – Let Me Handle That

If you’re looking for a Bellevue family photographer or a Seattle portrait photographer who knows how to create authentic, relaxed moments, you’re in the right place. I use a method called flow posing—which means you stay in a comfortable pose while I guide quick, natural shifts:

  1. Look at me—smile, don’t smile, now laugh.

  2. Look at your partner, now your kiddo.

  3. Everyone squeeze together—tickle fight!

  4. Break off into small groups—Dad and daughter, Mom and son, etc.

I had a session last year with a dad who walked in a little stiff but still willing to participate. Once I started directing the family, he fully leaned in—laughing, playing, and engaging with his kids. By the end, he told me, “That was the most fun I’ve ever had at a photo session. You’re really good at this.” It made my day—and it’s exactly what I aim for in every session. He was awesome, and the session was one of my favorite sessions of the summer. Just lean into the process and your photos will be everything you dream of.
