Why Pets Deserve a Spot in Your Family Photos

Okay, I’m going to come right out and say it: pets aren’t just pets—they’re family. If you’re booking a senior or family photo session and wondering whether you should include your furry (or feathered or scaled) best friend in the mix, let me tell you, the answer is a resounding YES. Pets bring love, joy, and comfort to our lives in a way that nothing else can, and they deserve to be part of your family’s visual legacy. So let’s talk about why I’m obsessed with including pets in photo sessions and why they add so much heart to your images.

They Add Pure Joy

There’s something about animals that naturally brings out the best in us. They make us laugh, they calm us when we’re stressed, and they can break down even the most stubborn of serious faces during a photoshoot. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve seen people light up because their dog snuggled in closer, or their cat did that weird stretch thing. Those unplanned, in-between moments often make for the most genuine, joy-filled photos—ones that you’ll want to keep forever.

It’s All About Connection

Your pet has probably been with you through some serious milestones, right? From long study sessions (I see you, high school seniors!) to tough days, your pets have been by your side. They’ve seen it all and loved you unconditionally through it all. Including them in your senior session or family photos is a way to celebrate that relationship. When you look at those photos years from now, you’ll not only see yourself at that moment but also be reminded of the deep connection you shared with your pet.

Pets Keep Things Real

Photo sessions can sometimes feel a little intimidating at first. But pets? They instantly break the ice. A lot of times, we’ll start by letting your pup or kitty do their thing, and suddenly, everyone’s a little more relaxed. They make the whole experience feel more natural, authentic, and fun. There’s no “say cheese” with your pet in the shot—it’s more like “grab the tennis ball” or “wait, the cat’s exploring the flower bush again!” It’s perfect.

Pets Are a Huge Part of the Story

Senior year is a BIG deal—it's a milestone marking a significant chapter in your life or your child’s life. And if your pet has been a part of that story, they should be there to help tell it. Whether it’s your dog who’s been your loyal companion since middle school or a pet bunny that’s part of all your daily routines, these creatures are part of your family’s journey. When we include them, we capture the full story.

Why I Love Having Pets in Photo Sessions

I’ve been there—the pet hair, the treats, the squeaky toys, the whole shebang. I love it all. Why? Because pets make photo sessions feel like home. They bring a sense of ease and authenticity that is hard to replicate. Plus, there’s no better way to bring out natural smiles and genuine moments of love. Whether it's a goofy dog tongue or a cat perched perfectly on a shoulder, pets bring out emotions and expressions in you that only they can.

So, if you’ve got a family pet and you’re thinking about leaving them at home for your senior or family session—don’t. Bring them along! Let’s celebrate the love and joy they bring into your life.
