Volunteer Park for Family Sessions

Seattle Family and High School Senior portrait Photographer

Nestled in one of the most opulent neighborhoods on Capital Hill, Volunteer Park is a gorgeous park perfect for your next family or high school senior photo session. The surrounding neighborhood is quiet and serene with blocks of beautiful houses, some as old as Seattle itself. The park boasts lush vegetation, incredible gardens, a conservatory, and a museum, but what makes Volunteer Park a true gem is it’s views of the entire city. This is one of my favorite parks to photograph families and seniors not only in the city of Seattle, but in the entire state itself.

A Gem at the Heart of Seattle

Volunteer Park really is a true gem within the Seattle Parks system. Centrally located in Seattle’s Capital Hill neighborhood, this 48-acre park is almost as old as the city itself. It’s perfectly manicured lawns, lush trees and bushes, and ornate flower gardens make for the most glorious backdrop for any photo session, rain or shine. The park is large, but easily walkable with paved walkways and a mostly flat terrain. It’s easily accessible and has plenty of street and lot parking, which makes it an ideal park for families with young children or elderly family members.

Architecture and Amenities

There are many beautiful parks in the Seattle area, but not many that boast unique architectural features and lush gardens. The metal front doors and marbled stairs of the Asian Art Museum create the most incredible and unique framing for portraits. The swirl and flower patterns pair nicely with the flower gardens dotted throughout the park. And the camel statue is a fun feature that kids love to climb and pose on. The Conservatory has five rooms that represent all the climates on earth. The structure looks like an incredible, victorian greenhouse and makes for a great feature in portraits.

The black sun sculpture is a striking and unique sculpture within the park and is perfectly located so that you can see the Space Needle in the center of the structure. Funny enough, I always thought it was a wheel or tire until I started researching the park’s history. Now, I see the sun within the sculpture. I love all the posing options this sculpture provides. The duck pond and park benches directly in front of the sun sculpture are the perfect spot for taking a little break and just letting family members have a snack (or giving the ducks a little snack). It also serves as a quick resting spot for small children between location changes.

A short distance away, y0u will find yourself in a giant field with huge, old, oak trees which are perfect for a game or two of tag or airplane. And across a walkway from the field, there is a beautiful public play structure with slides, swings, bridges, and monkey bars. It’s also one of the few parks that has amazing public restrooms with changing stations and state of the art facilities. No porta-potties or the usual public restroom necessary when you visit Volunteer Park. Who doesn’t love that?

This is a Park for Everyone

Why? Because it meets so many needs. I love a good scene change, and Volunteer has so many. Because there is so much variety within the park, it’s a great park for families with small children. It’s no secret how important I think play is in all aspects of life, and this park has so many places for families to play and have fun. It is also an easily walkable park, and has a lot of paved walkways that make it easy for people with mobility issues to get from one area to the next.

So if you want a park that checks all the boxes and lends itself to both urban and natural backdrops, Volunteer is the perfect location for your next photo session. It’s an incredibly vibrant, gorgeous park and will captivate your family with its beauty, charm, and amenities.
