Dear Mama: A love Letter to Help Dad Shine in Family Photo Sessions

3 Tips to turn Dad into a Family Photo Pro without the “Suck It Up” Mentality | Seattle Photographer

Father and son laugh and play on the Seattle waterfront

Hey Mama,

Real talk. When was the last time you felt good about doing something when someone told you to just “suck it up for the good of the family?” If you asked me that question, my honest answer would be never. I’ve never felt good about being told to suck it up. And yet, that’s what we tell dads about family photo sessions. Sure, we think they should just suck it up because beautiful images of our gorgeous families should be as important to them as they are to us, but it isn’t always that simple. As your family photographer, I am here to ensure that every moment we capture reflects the love and joy that fills your beautiful family. And today, I want to share some lighthearted tips to help Dad not only survive but thrive during our photography session.

First, let’s celebrate Dad’s unique style and perspective. Encourage him to showcase his personality and interests through the lens. Let him choose his outfit, and if that worries you, give him options or parameters so that he feels comfortable on the day of the session. Let him showcase his hobby (especially if it involves a musical instrument: playing his guitar on a blanket with you all surrounding him: swoon.) Or let him playfully rough house with your kids. Whether it’s his goofy antics with the kids or his passion for his hobby, embracing Dad’s quirks will infuse your session with genuine moments and endless smiles.

Second, let’s make this a team effort! Assigning roles to each family member can lighten the load for Dad and foster a sense of unity. From directing poses to holding props, let’s all chip in to create memories that will last a lifetime. Together, we’ll turn the photo session into a fun-filled adventure for the whole family.

Finally, let’s sprinkle in some extra love and encouragement to keep Dad’s spirits high. Offer him incentives that speak to his heart - whether it’s his favorite meal, a cozy movie night, or simply a heartfelt thank you. Remind him that his participation is valued and cherished, making the experience feel less like a chore and more like a joyous celebration of family love.

So, mama, let’s embark on this photo session with love, laughter, and a sprinkle of mischief. Together, we’ll capture the magic of your family in every frame, with Dad shining brightly at the center of it all.

xoxo, Katie
